Welcome to our dream come true.

Back in 2015, we came to Porto for a family weekend trip, not knowing our lives were about to change. While wandering through the streets, we came across an abandoned mansion, cracked and overgrown, with a "for sale" sign on its gate. The mansion was falling apart, but something about it, its fantastic location, its soul, spoke to us. We couldn't walk away. It felt like the house was calling us, as if it had stories to tell and new ones waiting to happen.

What began as curiosity grew into a dream: to restore the past and gift passionate travellers, like ourselves, a welcoming home in a unique corner of the world. The dream of Casa Kala was born... but the journey wasn't always easy. Years of restoration, sleepless nights, more doors knocked on than we can count, a pandemic that turned a "few months" into years. We were lucky to meet Ren Ito, a young architect who believed in the project as much as we did, and together with a dedicated team, we slowly brought the ruins back to life, uncovering the charm of a house that had once belonged to a family of coffee traders.

Along the way, we made a discovery: Januário Godinho, a renowned modernist architect, had contributed to the house's original design. That discovery made us even more determined to do it justice. In 2023, we were proud when the restoration received Portugal's National Architecture Award, a beautiful reminder of everything that went into bringing this house back to life.

Walk through the streets in the heart of Porto, past rows of townhouses packed closely together, and you'll notice a break in the landscape, a garden hidden behind a wall, a quiet escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Step through the gate, and it feels like entering a different world. Inside, light fills the hallway Godinho designed, where the original staircase and chandelier have been carefully restored and are waiting to be discovered.

With just nine thoughtfully designed rooms, Casa Kala is a boutique guesthouse where every moment feels personal and special. Picture starting your day with breakfast in the garden -fresh fruit, eggs cooked just how you like them, traditional Portuguese pastries- then let us share our love for Porto: insider tips, restaurant recommendations, unique day-trip ideas. After a day of exploring, come back and relax in the garden: sink into a hammock, enjoy a cocktail, or treat yourself to an on-site massage.

Every corner of this house tells a story, about Porto's history, about the architects who shaped it, and especially about the love we've put into every detail to turn an abandoned house into Casa Kala, inviting you to experience Porto in a way you never imagined.

Porto's own name traces back to "Portus Cale," the Roman port that grew, centuries later, into "Portugal" itself — some believe "Cale" carries Celtic roots for a harbour, a point of arrival; others trace it to the Greek "Kallis," meaning beautiful. Across the Mediterranean, a cala is a small, sheltered bay, tucked away from the open sea. And in Sanskrit, kala means both time and art. Casa Kala, then: a house shaped by time and care, a small harbour in the city where you arrive and simply feel at home.
