Welcome to Casa Kala, "Your Place" in the heart of Porto's historic center. 

Our story began a few years ago when we stumbled upon this magnificent building during a weekend getaway. Its enigmatic aura and fantastic location captured our imagination, little did we know that this trip would change our lives. 

We were struck by the beauty and charm of the old Mansion. Despite its state of disrepair, we felt a deep connection and were determined to embark on the challenging journey of transforming it into our dream guesthouse.

After countless sleepless nights and knocking on many doors, we finally found the means to start the renovation. What we thought would take a couple of months turned into years…  We were fortunate to meet a talented young architect named Ren Ito, who shared our enthusiasm for the project. With his passion for architecture and a dedicated team, we were able to transform the old ruins into something truly spectacular, restoring  the original beauty and charm of the old Merchant's House.

Casa Kala stands out for its architectural elegance, originally designed by Januário Godinho, a celebrated Portuguese architect. In transforming it, we've meticulously preserved and integrated its historic design elements. This seamless blend of history and modernity has earned Casa Kala the prestigious National Architecture Award Espaço 2023.

The city of Porto has a rich history, dating back to the ancient Roman City of Portus Cale, which was an important commercial port next to the Douro River. The name "Portus Cale" evolved into "Portugale", a legacy that lives on in the country's name. Historians suggest that this name may derive from the Greek word "Καλλις Kallis", meaning beautiful. And there's no better place to experience the beauty and history of this city than at Casa Kala.
